As a part off the Cars 3 press junket we got to interview Lightning McQueen, Natalie Certain, Cruz Ramirez and Jackson Storm this past Saturday. Of course, they’re better known as Owen Wilson, Kerry Washington, Cristela Alonzo and Armie Hammer.
Armie Hammer on being a jerk as Jackson Storm.
I had good, strict parents who always told me to be nice to everybody and all that. Then he got into recording they’re like we really want you to kind of really jerk it up. Be like the biggest jerk. I’m yeah, got it, got it, got it. It was fun getting to do that, getting to like access and do that, but in a safe environment where I wasn’t actually offending anybody.
Armie jokes that it came too easy to him – as scary as that is.
Cristela Alonzo on her personal connection to her character Cruz Ramirez.
John Lasseter came into the recording studio one day when Cristela was recording and she thanked him for allowing her to be a part of a Pixar movie, even though Cruz Ramirez was originally going to be a male car.
Cristela never imagined this was something that would be a possibility for her because so many people had always told her, especially where she grew up, that she can’t do anything. Growing up everyone was also ready to knock you down a peg or two.
After listening to Cristela’s story John Lasseter actually took that story and ran with it. Growing up Cristela had always been told to dream small, her family used it as a way to keep her from getting her heart broken and John took that line and used it in the movie, with Cruz telling Lighting that she’d always been told to dream small.
Been told that she cannot have big dreams because those things don’t happen for people like them. From these stories, the raw emotion, was integrated into Cruz’s character.
More to come here AFTER RELEASE WEEKEND to avoid any spoilers.
Kerry Wilson on how she relates Cars 3 to our willingness to create a disposable society.
When asked if she’d learned anything from her character in Cars 3, Kerry was quick to say that while it is a bit of a stretch, because her role is such a supporting character. However, she did say that it made her think of the disposable society that we live in, because Natalie Certain is so sure that Storm in going to win, because of the numbers.
She’s just so sure, and she’s certain that you can kind of discount everybody else because of the hot, new thing is the way to go.
She continues that she feels we really have to be careful about that as a society, not just in her business (acting) but in general.
Kerry recalls a story she’d heard recently, about how Rutgers University paid more money than they’d ever paid to any visiting speaker person ever the year that Snooki came to teach. Without judging, but reminding us that she is a reality star and that was the same year that Maya Angelou spoke at their commencement.
It just made her realize that we can sometimes prioritize hot and new more than we prioritize wise and creative.
Owen Wilson on reaching out to kids, who’ve literally latched onto the Cars movies for over a decade.
Owen says that feels great to do something creative, like the Cars movies and have it mean something special to people. Be it special needs children who latch onto the idea of the cars, or any of the kids running around that love the movies and literally watch them over and over again.
“That’s a great feeling.” – Owen Wilson.
While it is always surreal that I get to be just feet away from celebrities like this, I hope I’ve shared a fun snippet with you all and a little insight into each of the Cars 3 main characters.
Remember – go watch the movie TOMORROW, June 16th in theaters everywhere!!
