Helping Students Enjoy Learning: Tips to Make Lessons Fun and Engaging

January 4, 2022 By Africa

With the current trend of children being more interested in technology than books, keeping students engaged and interested in learning is becoming increasingly challenging. However, teachers can take simple steps to help students enjoy their lessons and even look forward to coming back tomorrow. Here are tips on making your lessons fun and engaging for children so they want to learn.

Helping Students Enjoy Learning: Tips to Make Lessons Fun and Engaging

Break Up Your Lessons for Learning

Breaking up your lessons is one way to make learning fun and engaging. For example, instead of teaching multiplication facts for one hour straight, train them in five-minute increments throughout the day’s lessons.

You can break up your lessons by using different methods such as:

  • Tell a story

Conduct an experiment or activity

  • Play games and compete with your students against themselves or each other
  • Show a video or demonstration
  • Do a worksheet- Click here to learn more about worksheets https://studentreasures.com/teachers-lounge/lesson-plans/first-grade/ for your proper planning purposes.
  • Have students work in pairs or groups
  • Take a break and let them move around

Having breaks will help your students feel refreshed and ready to learn again.

Incorporate New Things

Introducing new lessons will keep your students excited about what you have to teach them next. For instance, some ideas for incorporating new material into your lesson plan are:

  • Read a book or show a video on the topic

Research it online as a class project– Click here if you want more information on how to research topics with children from kindergarten through an eighth-grade range of age.

  • Watch YouTube videos on the subject matter

Even though this is not related directly to learning content, showing movies that cover relevant subjects such as science fiction movies may be used as an additional way of engaging students in learning activities without taking up too much time.

  • Do a crossword puzzle or word search that covers the topic you are studying

Crosswords and word searches can be used as supplementary quizzes to check if your students have learned their lessons. Word searches with specific words related to what you are teaching will help your students retain the information they may not know by another method of study material.

  • Present an experiment, craft project, or game about the subject matter

This is one of the most popular ways to engage children in learning activities. Doing crafts like macaroni art also helps them understand new concepts better than other methods. This lets them visually see how things work together, helping accomplish tasks step-by-step through visuals instead of just reading about it.

  • Play games and compete with your students against themselves or each other

Using fun games that require teamwork to accomplish tasks will keep children interested in learning new ideas rather than getting bored of repetitive lessons. Some examples are:

Tug of war using a rope tied around the waist by all team members increases as they work together to win the game until one side is defeated.

Conclusion

Learning can be a fun and enjoyable experience for children when presented in a way that engages them. By incorporating new things, giving students choices, and being open to creativity, teachers can help their students enjoy learning.

Additionally, breaking up the lessons and scheduling field trips are great ways to make learning more fun. With these tips, teaching will be enjoyable and informative for both the teacher and the student.
