It is so important to know how to unwind in your spare time so that you can fully relax and recharge. Sometimes, we don’t allow ourselves enough time and space to unwind in the evenings before going to sleep, which can cause disrupted sleep or issues with falling asleep. Therefore, here is a guide to help you unwind and achieve better sleep.
The right lighting
It is important to have the right lighting when you are unwinding so that you can fully switch off and relax. Bright lights can cause you to re-energize, which is something you want to avoid before getting in bed to go to sleep.
For instance, adding table lamps to your bedside tables is a great way to set the ambiance. A bedside table enables you to lie in bed and relax while reading or sewing (or whatever you like to do while relaxing) instead of being in the dark. You can enjoy your time in bed and unwind properly to get a good night’s sleep.
Keep your feet warm
This tip sounds crazy but warm feet can, in fact, make you feel more relaxed. Being warm feel promotes coziness and calm. When you have cold feet, it can cause irritation and tension. Tension is something to avoid when you are trying to unwind.
Therefore, keeping your feet warm with socks or slippers can help promote relaxation, which will help you unwind properly and get to sleep. It is best to take your socks off before sleep as you will want to avoid your feet overheating during the night. Thus, try to get them warm before you get into bed for the most successful night’s sleep.
Get off your phone
It is a common mistake to take your phone to bed with you. Being on your phone before bed can keep your mind wired and it certainly isn’t an ideal way to unwind.
When you are taking time to unwind, it is best to avoid all digital devices. Being on your phone can cause you to overthink or overwork, which is the opposite of unwinding. Before you head to bed, try not to use your phone for at least an hour to give your mind time to switch off.
Practice meditation
A mindful practice that is known to promote relaxation is meditation. It is an act whereby you sit or lie still for a period of time, focus on your breathing, and gather your thoughts to the present moment. It allows you to slow down and achieve inner peace, which is something many of us lack in our day-to-day lives.
Meditation doesn’t have to be a long practice to be successful. Meditating for 5 minutes a day is enough for you to achieve relaxation. Try it first thing in the morning for a calmer mind. And/or, try it before bed to unwind and achieve the best sense of relaxation and to help your mind and body relax before trying to get a good night’s sleep.
