Babies are difficult to parent. But as kids get older, life becomes easier for a while. The so-called “latency” period between the ages of around five and eleven is surprisingly easy. Kids don’t create that much trouble. Then the teen years hit and everything becomes so much more difficult again – especially when it comes to matters of gift giving.
What on Earth are you supposed to buy your teenage son or daughter anyway?
If you’re feeling completely stuck, don’t worry. In this post, we take a look at some of the things that you can buy that will transform their lives from “yawn” to awesome.
Check out my gifts for teens suggestions below.
Fanny Packs
If you think fanny packs are a relic of the 1980s, then you’ve got another thing coming. These retro items are making a big comeback, thanks to all the gadgets and gizmos that young people have to carry around with them all the time.
The stylishness of fanny packs is changing massively. These days, you can buy them in bright, psychedelic colors that look absolutely incredible. Surely every teen will want one of these.
Screen Cleaning Pad
On the subject of technology, you might also want to invest in a small screen cleaning pad for your teen.
Screens are a magnet for dirt and grime – even those that you’re not supposed to touch. Giving teens a cleaning pad that they can use allows them to wipe it all away in a flash without having to carry around a bunch of ugly disposable wipes with them. Most screen cleaning pads are made of suede which helps to eliminate the risk of scratches and keep screens in tip-top condition.
Bluetooth Speaker
You probably saw this one coming. But with the world opening back up and social gatherings becoming a thing once more, bluetooth speakers are all the rage. They’re perfect for pool parties, picnics and any other event that doesn’t have a mains power connection nearby.
Bluetooth speakers are also perfect for teens who love camping and hiking. They can blast their favorite tunes all day and all night (if the campsite will allow it).
Personalized Doormat
Getting your teen a personalized doormat is a great way of killing two birds with one stone. Not only is it totally original, but by making it personal, you actually encourage your teen to wipe their feet when they come in from a muddy day outside.
Neon Sign
Neon signs are just for shops right?
Wrong. It turns out that neon signs work really well indoors too, especially in teen’s bedrooms. You can use a 3D sign to brighten up a wall and create a moody atmosphere that your child will love..
Facemask Pot
Regular masks that come in sachets are often overwhelmingly disappointing. Once you’ve used them once, that’s it.
But marshmallow face masks are different. With these, you get an entire pot of mask putty, allowing your teen to get multiple applications out of a single product. Masks are great for any teens going through the annoying acne stage of growing up.
Karaoke Set
Purchasing a wireless karaoke set can be a great way to get your teen into singing. Plus it also allows them to have fun when their friends come over too. Today, there are loads of karaoke apps that you can download onto the computer, so there’s no need for a separate machine either. How good is that?
Portable Charger
Still stuck for ideas? Why not get your teen a portable charger? These are essentially just big battery packs that they can attach to their phones while they are on the go. Most have enough charge for around two full cycles of their regular phone battery, giving them days of charge if they happen to be out in the middle of nowhere.
Inflatable Lounger
You could also get them an inflatable lounger to put in the garden. These look a little bit like giant bean bags. But instead of being filled with extruded polystyrene, they’re full of thin air. And the best bit? You can take them pretty much whenever you like: the park, campsites, the woods – you name it.
Instant-Print Digital Camera
Here’s another retro gift idea that your teen will love if they have a passion for travel: an instant-print digital camera. These are a little bit like modern versions of Polaroids. But instead of having a massively bulky frame, they use micro-printing technology so that they can remain flat, like most other modern devices. They’re also relatively inexpensive too, which is a surprise for many parents who grew up when electronics were horrendously expensive.
Camera Drone
On the camera theme, another really great gift for teens is a camera drone. If you click here, you can learn more about the kinds of features that they offer. The main benefit of drones is their immense ability to take beautiful photographs in practically any location. Teens can easily and quickly make beautiful videos of beaches, mountains, forests or anywhere else in the countryside. It’s the perfect gift for anyone who has a travel blog.
Standard Mouth Bottle
Okay, a standard mouth bottle might not sound like the most interesting gift in the world, but it is super practical and something that every teen will enjoy. It’s a good way for teens to keep themselves hydrated on long, hot summer days, and also save the planet at the same time (because they won’t need to rely on plastic water bottles anymore).
Goal-Setting Notebook
Today’s teens are an aspirational bunch – or at least, they were, until COVID-19 struck. So getting them a goal-setting notebook can be a great way to get them to write down what they’d like to achieve and how they’re going to get there. There are all sorts of personalized designs and styles out there, so you’re spoiled for choice.
Crocs
Crocs shoes and sandals are, unbelievably, becoming much more popular again, all thanks to customization. These days, you don’t have to make do with boring designs. Instead, your teen can play around with charms and colors to create a shoe that’s perfect for them.
Lip Scrub
If your teen isn’t quite at the makeup stage, then you might want to try them on lip scrub. These come in a variety of delicious flavors, such as peppermint and vanilla, and can be a great way to introduce your teen to lip balms.
Cable Protector
Broken chargers are the bane of many parents’ lives. Not only are they expensive, but they’re also horrendously inconvenient too. When a charger breaks and there’s no backup, all hell breaks loose.
Cable protectors work by changing the way the interface between the phone and the charger works. The best designs have an insert that permanently fits into the phone’s port and then a magnetic attachment for the charger cable that will never break.
Ivy Vine String Lights
Ivy vine string lights are perhaps the coolest looking fairy lights in existence. And what’s great about them is that they will fit in any space, no matter how tiny your teen’s bedroom might be. They help to create a sort of cottage look.
Facial Roller
Instagram beauty gurus are obsessed with skin rollers. They claim that they help to reduce the dreaded “puff” skin. (They probably don’t make any difference at all, but that hasn’t stopped their popularity). Facial rollers are affordable and will probably already be on your teen’s wish list.
