Does Product Origin Really Matter?

February 24, 2021 By Africa

It’s long been a common trend for products to be stamped with the country that they came from, with most people having at least a handful of belongings that proudly say “Made In China” on them. While this feels completely normal to most people, the origin of your products can actually be extremely important. To give you an idea of why this matters, this post will be exploring the impact that ordering from overseas can have, while also giving you some ideas and tips that will help you to source your products from the right place in the future.

Does Product Origin Really Matter?

Environmental Impact

Shipping goods across the world is often impossible to avoid, especially when it comes to technology, cars, and other large products. When it comes to food, though, there is usually no reason for it to have moved across the world before it hits your plate. A potato that has travelled from a local farm will consume far less energy than one that has been imported from overseas. This makes it worth looking for products that have come from local farms, rather than buying them from very far away.

Economical Impact

Your local and national economy is stimulated a lot more when you buy something that has been produced in your home country. Those in the factory and the fields will spend their money in your country after earning it, with packaging, shipping, and a host of other companies getting to take advantage of your purchase. Businesses like freight shipping can be very important, making it worth supporting them to ensure that they last into the future.

Social Impact

This next area is something that no everyone will care about or agree with, but it’s quite clear to many that relying on countries like China and Taiwan for the bulk of the world’s products is having a big social impact. People living in these countries often have to work very hard, with their blood, sweat, and tears paying for the cheap items you’re able to buy. Of course, though, this is something that you have to assess for yourself, and it’s worth thinking about it very carefully.

The Future Impact

It’s no secret that China is on its way to becoming the largest economy in the world. While this isn’t a bad thing for people in China, though, it could make life harder for much of the rest of the world as time goes on. Countries need to work towards having a level playing field, with those in positions of power having the opportunity to improve the market for everyone. Manufacturing is one of the biggest fields in the world for producing jobs, and this needs to be kept in mind.

With all of this to reflect on, it can be much easier to see the value in spending money on goods from your own country. There are loads of reasons to support those around you, with everyone’s contributions to the local economy impacted and improving the lives of those who share their country.
