We all know the summer is starting to wrap up, kids head back to school and fall colors are starting to peak through. With these facts staring us in the face you might think that your chance at a getaway have passed, however, I am very glad to tell you there is still plenty of time to pack your bags and get out of town.
Labor Day weekend is the start of ‘shoulder season’ – a season of value-packed travel for late summer vacationers. Vrbo has found that prime vacation rental homes in coveted beach and lake destinations will drop roughly 29% during the month of September.
Shoulder Season offers many benefits for vacationers – from reduced vacation rental home prices, bigger inventories and less crowded beaches.
If you’re like me, and NOT ready to let go of summer just yet, or if you live in a generally colder climate and the thought of travelling in the middle of summer is concerning due to the heat, then the shoulder travel season is YOUR time to travel.
Heading over to the Vrbo website you can go ahead and start planning. I shared about Vrbo Trip Boards earlier this summer and I am having so much fun planning a fun get away to South Padre Island during the upcoming shoulder season.
While I picked South Padre Island, I wanted to share other destinations that Vrbo has identified as the top for shoulder season savings;
- Ocean City, N.J. – 29% less per night ($417 vs. $296)
- Sunriver, Ore. – 29% less per night ($401 vs. $285)
- Ocean City, Md. – 29% less per night ($359 vs. $254)
- Cape Cod, Mass. – 25% less per night ($402.25 vs. $304)
- Lincoln City, Ore. – 25% less per night ($349 vs. $263)
- Myrtle Beach, S.C. – 24% less per night ($255 vs. $193)
- South Padre Island, Texas – 23% less per night ($307 vs. $235)
- Whitefish, Mont. – 22% less per night ($321 vs. $250)
- Bar Harbor, Maine – 22% less per night ($334 vs. $261)
- Hilton Head Island, S.C. – 19% less per night ($281 vs. $227)
Searching the Vrbo website for family friendly rental vacation homes/condos is easy. You can filter you search by the needs of your group, be it pet friendly, family friendly, number of rooms, etc. Looking to plan a trip for a group of friends, or family? You can easily share your trip board to everyone who needs to view it, either as view only or with the ability to comment on, vote on and add or remove properties.
If you’re wondering how to pronounce the name – Vrbo – you’re not alone, luckily the company has decided to officially go with “VER-boh” removing all guessing around the name.
My only open item is – WHERE will you head to this ‘shoulder season’? Let Vrbo help take the stress and confusion out of trying to find accommodation – check out their website and be sure to download their app.

We used a VRBO when we went to Disney last summer and had a great experience. It was way cheaper than a hotel would have cost with a lot more amenities.
