I have a confession
I’ve never seen a Star Wars movie in my life! Well that was until yesterday – I got to attend the preview screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
I know what you’re thinking, you’re upset that someone who’s never seen one of these movies got to see it before the general public, I know that my father in law was a lot less than happy with me!
WHY did I choose to go see it? Part of it was because everyone is talking about it, I mean have you made it through one TV show or football game lately and not seen ads for the movie? Or – try going shopping without seeing something Star Wars related – not possible! I had to see for myself what all the hype was about, there has to be something that is making this such a huge movie release – right?!
The answer is YES! There is something about the movie that had me sucked in from the minute it started. From the films signature beginning to the very last minute, I was enthralled, barely fidgeted, and not once did I think about looking at my cell phone, which if you know me you’ll know is very, very rare (plus – we had to give in our phones prior to the screening for security reasons).
Now, I am under a strict non-disclosure agreement regarding this movie. They really don’t want spoilers to leak and ruin your experience watching it and I most definitely do not want to be the person who lets the ‘cat out of the bag’, especially considering I haven’t see any prior movies, I honestly don’t know what is considered a spoiler and what isn’t.
Therefore, I am sticking to the reasons I can share with you regarding why The Force Awakens has made me a Star Wars fan!
I love how the old, or shall we say ‘more mature’ has been mixed in with the new – returning is Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia (now General Leia Organa), and Harrison Ford as Han Solo.
New is Adam Driver who plays Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey and John Boyega as Finn. All of whom weren’t yet born when Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi released back in 1983.
Both Daisy and John are British actors whose roles in The Force Awakens are very ‘kick ass!’ Daisy, or Ray, is a completely self-sufficient woman, doing things that need to get done in order to survive, an excellent message for all girls out there!! John, or Finn, is the first black leading actor in a Star Wars movie and while some are choosing to react negatively to this I encourage it and absolutely love it. Congratulations to John on his role and congratulations to the producers for including diversity in their cast.
Further exploring the old and the new – R2-D2 and C-3PO are back and the movie introduces BB-8 a brand new droid. More than this, however, you’ll have to go watch the movie. Trust me it will be worth it!
Chewbacca – I really don’t need to say more, but I will. I have always loved Chewbacca, despite never seeing a Star Wars movie. Everyone knows Chewbacca right? He might actually be my favorite character. I want to get myself a Chewbacca I think I’ll add one to my Christmas gift list. Did you know that Peter Mayhew, who plays Chewbacca, is 7’2” tall?
Another reason I am now in love with Star Wars movies, and have asked my father in law to watch the old movies with me too (which he agreed to, without hesitation) is because they blow stuff up, they shoot stuff, they fly things and the special effects are AMAZING!!!
I didn’t see The Force Awakens in 3D but I will be going to see it again to watch it in 3D and I cannot encourage you enough to go see it too!! Don’t say you’re not a Star Wars fan – because I thought I wasn’t too and now I can’t believe I’ve missed out on all the films prior to this one!! Take a break from Christmas shopping this weekend and head to your local theater to watch it and then be sure to come back and let me know what you think!!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in U.S. theaters on December 18.
