Disclosure: I attended this event as part of an all-expense paid press trip for Disney. However, all opinions are completely my own. #GoodDinoEvent #ABCTVEvent
The wait is over – The Good Dinosaur is in theaters TODAY!! I have encouraged you to go see this movie and after having the opportunity to watch it twice last week, I stick by my original recommendation – RUN, don’t walk, to see it!
If you don’t take my word at ‘face value’ and you require a little more encouragement, I have it for you – read on!!
Five Reasons you NEED to see The Good Dinosaur (TODAY!)
Meaning of family
My love for this movie grew after seeing it because it covers the traditional meaning of family, Arlo with his brother and sister, and their parents. However, as the movie progresses, it also covers a couple types of ‘non-traditional’ families. One being a single mom trying her best to survive the hardships life hands her, while raising and providing for her family.
As Spot’s role in the movie develops you learn that he too had a family, but he lost his mom and dad. He is an orphan, but he ends up finding a new family and they take him in as one of their own. I love how the movie exposes these non-traditional family types, helping to redefine the meaning of a ‘traditional’ family and show how every family is important, no matter how it is made up. As my family is ‘non-traditional’ this really resonates with me.
Friendship
As the movie plays out the role of friendship is a significant aspect. While Spot and Arlo’s relationship starts out at a really bad place, their relationship builds as they face challenges together on their journey back to Arlo’s home.
This is one of the aspects of the movie that I absolutely love. Teaching our kids that while they might not initially get along with someone they can work together to overcome obstacles and in time they might become friends.
Loyalty
While Buck gives Arlo a hard time, as he is bigger and braver, the loyalty of brotherhood is there throughout. Arlo’s loyalty to his family speaks volumes to his character, a character I think any parent would be proud of in their child.
After Arlo loses his dad, his mom is working as hard as she can to harvest the crops, but she succumbs to the weight of her load. Arlo is ever present; he runs over to her and steps up, picking up her load of the harvest and promises they will get the job done before the first snow. His loyalty to the family, to the farm, to his responsibilities is ever present throughout the movie and is a remarkable trait to have.
Facing your fears
From the very beginning Arlo is portrayed as a smaller, more fragile dinosaur than his siblings. His chore around the farm is to feed the chickens, but he is paralyzed with fear as they chase him through the pen. He is basically scared of just about everything he has to face. However, there are numerous moments in the film where he stands up to those fears and faces them head on, often with the help of Spot.
There is a pivotal part of the movie where Butch, a T-Rex, says to Arlo; “If you ain’t scared, you ain’t alive!” which is such an important lesson to teach our children. Having fear is not always a bad thing. Having fear is realizing that something might be daunting, yet you are able to overcome it when you truly put your mind to it.
Humor
There are so many moments in the movie that will have you laughing. Perhaps a scene or two will go over the heads of your kids, but that’s all the more reason to head out to enjoy it. This is a movie that both kids and adults will enjoy.
Without giving away the hilarity you’ll enjoy while watching The Good Dinosaur, I did want to share this, already released clip, with you of The Pet Collector;
This is just one of the extremely humorous parts of The Good Dinosaur but there are so many more. Once you’ve seen the movie be sure to stop back and comment below what your favorite funny scene was.
The producers have really gone above and beyond in making a movie that will show our kids important life lessons, yet they’ll be having too much fun enjoying the movie to realize that they’re actually learning these traits. They’ve made a movie that will have you laughing until you cry and just plain crying, over and over again.
The culmination of these reasons (along with many I am sure I didn’t include here) is why I cannot recommend enough to take your whole family out to enjoy The Good Dinosaur this holiday weekend. If you don’t already have a family tradition of taking in a movie over the holidays, let this movie be the reason you start it!
