We’re just to the potty training stage with Gradie and while it is not the easiest step in Gradie’s development we do have a few tips and tricks that we’ve been using to make the process easier that I wanted to share with you. If you have any to add I hope you’ll comment below and let me know – we can use all the help we can get!!
Our main focus has been on team work, this is a journey our entire family is on and Jeanna, myself AND Gradie are working together as a team to get her potty trained. We celebrate her accomplishments as a family and giving her fun rewards is so much fun, she gets so proud of herself.
Another useful tip is to watch your little one for the signs that they’re ready to ‘go’! Sometimes I think that Jeanna and I have become detectives, like ‘pee and poop detectives’. Gradie always tries to hide when she needs to ‘go’ so as soon as we see her doing this we get all excited about her using the big girl potty.
We’ve also introduced a couple books and DVD’s to help Gradie make the connection between the urge to ‘go’ and actually asking for her potty or to use the toilet. Thus far these training tools have been very useful and Gradie has really started to make the connection.
A useful tool is to have the right equipment. Gradie was very excited about going to the store to purchase her first set of ‘big girl’ underwear and I encourage you to make this shopping trip a big deal that they’ll really enjoy. We’ve also included a step stool in our bathroom so that Gradie can use the toilet more easily and also to help her reach the sink to wash her hands.
We have also introduced the use of treats as a way to reward Gradie for using the potty. As you can see in the picture above we have been using candy as a reward for Gradie. We like to use candy where we can give her a couple pieces (like M&M’s) and not the entire treat.
An invaluable tool we have found is Charmin Ultra Soft, available at Sam’s Club. I don’t know if you know this, but little ones use a LOT of toilet paper while they’re potty training, and Gradie is no exception. She pulls off a whole lot more toilet paper then she needs but Sam’s Club currently has Charmin Ultra Soft packages that offer a thousand more sheets per package – offering your family more, great value for your dollar. Of course the fact that Charmin Ultra Soft toilet paper is so soft is a huge bonus for Gradie and her mom’s – everyone loves soft toilet paper!
Be sure to visit your local Sam’s Club to pick up Charmin Ultra Soft, now featuring a bonus 1,000 sheets per package to help make potty training easier on your child’s behind, and save you $$ by getting more for less!

Never thought of using more toilet paper when potty training. Makes complete sense just something we forget. Thanks for the reminder, my little one will be entering this stage soon.

I don’t have a membership for Sam’s Club anymore. Sometimes I wish I did but I didn’t shop there much when I did. I mostly like the sampling, lol.

I need to check this out. My niece is being potty trained right now. When she visits me she always uses a lot of toilet paper.
