Stone Soup and other stories from the Asian Tradition

scholastic DVD logo

So, little Miss Elliot has discovered Barney the big purple dinosaur… and as educational and entertaining as it may seem… it’s defiantly not in my top 10 DVD’s to watch!

Thank goodness for Scholastic Storybook Treasures!  Scholastic has introduced me to yet another set of stories, this time from the Asian Tradition.

The Stone Soup DVD is a collection of traditionally Asian stories including Stone Soup, The Five Chinese Brothers, Lon Po Po and the Stonecutter.  Now, I am sure most of my readers have heard of these stories, Jeanna had, but honestly I hadn’t.  I was excited to watch them with Miss Elliot.

First, the title story, Stone Soup, and from what I hear, a very popular folk story in which hungry strangers persuade local people of a town to give them food.  It’s a great lesson in cooperation.

Then comes The Five Chinese Brothers and I’m not going to lie, it’s a cute little story but I’m not sure what the lesson in this one is; perhaps that all five brothers are uniquely different and offer their own extraordinary ability.  All in all it was a good watch.

Lon Po Po is my favorite for one very simple reason… I know it! It’s the story of Red Riding Hood and easily put, teaches the story of STRANGER DANGER to a new generation of youngsters!

Finally, The Stonecutter… a story about a man who thinks he needs more in life.  He sees those around him have much more wealth and power and craves the same. After his wishes are granted he soon realized he was more satisfied in life and a lowly Stonecutter,

At only 43 minutes the DVD kept Elliot’s attention the entire time with its vibrant colors and upbeat tones and music.  The DVD is a bit beyond Elliot’s age recommended for those 4-9, perfect for those beginning to read with the Read-A-Long feature.
