Stellaluna – Scholastic DVD ~ Review & Giveaway (ends 3/28)

March 19, 2012 By Africa

Stellaluna

Stellaluna is a fantastic, heartwarming tale that the entire family can enjoy.  It is adapted from the children’s best-selling classic book.  The story starts as Stellaluna, a fruit bat, is separated from her mom, one night, by an owl attacking them as they were out looking for food.  After been separated she falls into a birds nest and is adopted by a family of birds.  However, she almost immediately realizes she is DIFFERENT then them, and the mother bird tells her she needs to behave as a good bird should, including NOT hanging upside down and other bat like behaviors.  But soon enough Stellaluna realizes that her differences, such as her night vision, and been nocturnal, are driving a wedge between her and her adopted brothers and sisters and Stellaluna yearns to be able to fit in.

During her journeys Stellaluna realizes that there are things that one should cherish about been different!!  Most importantly Stellaluna and her adopted siblings realize that having an open mind and an open heart leads to the greatest gifts of all!!!  A life lesson that all children should learn and, Stellaluna, the Scholastic DVD, tells this story in a fantastic, musical, and creative way.  Having the ability to be open minded and accepting of others differences is so vital in today’s day and age as we are repeatedly reminded that each and every one of us is different and unique in their own wonderful ways!!!

The Stellaluna DVD, brought to you by Scholastic Storybook Treasures, has a running time of 41 minutes plus bonus features, including a innovative read along function, a sing along function and the DVD comes with a Stellaluna Activity Booklet.  The DVD can be purchased for just $12.95 from the Scholastic Storybook Treasures website.  I highly recommend this DVD to all parents out there with youngsters as an easy to understand way of teaching our children to embrace the differences in one another, and of course the fun extra features that come along with the DVD add to the value of the overall purchase.

Stellaluna has received the following awards:

    • Parents’ Choice Recommended Award
    • iParenting Media Award
    • Newport Beach Film Festival Outstanding Achievement in Family Entertainment Award
    • Grammy winner for Best Spoken Word Album

I would love to have any of the signed (sign language) collection. It is wonderful to see a ‘mainstream’ company offer some childrens classics so Deaf/HOH children can enjoy the same stories as their peers!
