Well the rest of the flight into Reykjavik went well. I slept on and off for a bit, but nothing great. Then it was time to land. Passport control was a breeze……they could teach the American customs officials a thing or two that’s for sure. Then we had to all get packed into a bus to go to the terminal to get our bags. They packed us in like sardines in a can, I feel bad for anyone who was too close to me after my night of running across airports at break neck speeds. Got to the main terminal, got my bags and went thru the gates and immediately was approached by a blond guy asking if I was Debbie………guess what I was!!!!! J
He threw my bags into his car and just like that we were off. I couldn’t tell you his name because he tried to tell me hwat it was and even if you offered me a million dollars I could not repeat it. We just spoke about random things like the population of Iceland is about 300,000 people, that there are no trees on the sides of the roads and also barely any sand its all just black lava from old volcano’s, it was really quite weird. There are trees however in the cities, which I presume have been planted to beautify the area), that Iceland went from the 5th richest nation to about the 12th richest nation after the banking collapse that affected most of the world and that this man (name TBD) has as his job the sole paid position within Iceland Ice Hockey. The government here pays the salary of one person to run the sport, kickball, soccer, hockey etc. What a sweet ass job! Last week he was in Mexico with the U/18’s and now here, then next week off to Copenhagen and Croatia.
Then we got to his offices and I went online a bit ot let Jeanna and momma know I was here safe and alive and obviously update my status so others would know I was here too. I don’t yet have pictures of the lava stuff, but will definitelyl get them. After doing that we went to eat and then I napped from about 9am till noon on the couch outside his offices, woke up at noon and was asked if I wanted to go to so off I went to eat. This was my first adventure in Icelandic cuisine……….breakfast was good, lunch well that was different. I THINK I ate rice with mince/hamburger (SA vs USA word) stuff over it. I think it was from a cow, but of this I cannot be sure so I just ate and shut up. Also had some salad with that, there was a lot of stuff out that I had no clue what it was so I just skipped it until I could have more proof of my bravery with the rest of the team there to witness it! Ha!
Then we went back upstairs and again I napped for about an hour or so after which we headed to the ice rink, dropped off my bag, forgot my sticks in his car, doh!!!!!!!! Then he took me to show me the ice……..its kinda like Minneahaha academy……….a barn!!!! Used to be an outdoor rink and it has been enclosed, it is cold. However, I will be playing so wont be impacted by it quite so much. The quality of the ice looked good which is what matters to me!!
Then he asked if I wanted to go with to get the team or go to the hostel, I asked for the hostel as I was tired and needed sleep.
He dropped me off here with my bag, again I forgot my sticks ~ double doh!!!! Then he was off to the airport for the girls and I was here. Before my shower and sleep I went to the bank, which was fun reading a map with words you couldn’t possibly pronouce but ensure they look the same as the words on the map J The lady at the hostel told me where to go, she was extremely friendly. Her directions did right by me and I got to the bank, forgot I didn’t bring my passport, and refused to go back to get it so tried my luck and went in, told the lady I’d like to change $150, she said no problem and gave me 16,802Kr (Krona) then told me what some sort of things cost so I could get an idea if what I’d just exchanged was a lot or not……….because to me it was! LOL.
Then again I went off on my journey and headed to the gas station to get a prepaid SIM card. I asked the guy well how does it work, he looked at me, giggled and said well you get a card put it in phone and TA DA it works……..I cracked up and told him VERY FUNNY!!!!!!! LOL Then he told me about 3 different providers etc . I just went with vodaphone cause I had in the past and they’re the biggest company here. So got that all set and headed on my journey back across town to the hostel. Got here and turned on the shower for what I thought was going to be the best shower ever……..boy did I need it!!!! Well the water that came out smelt bad L like borehole water, or like stinky egg farts………..but I jut let it run a while and showered, what could I do? I didn’t smell of dirty egg farts afterwards so it was a success. After which I ……….yup you guessed it, I napped again until the girls arrived!!!!!
The girls got here and I’m in a room tonight with Jadi, Dalene, Donne and Bianca (tomorrow we’ll be in rooms of 2 at the actual hotel). WE just all got ready for dinner, and because it wasn’t provided tonight we had to fend for ourselves so we ended up at subway, a staple for me that can’t go bad and isn’t that bad for you! Then we just headed back to the hotel for a team meeting and regroup of where we are at and whats the plan of attack for Saturday, moving hotels, lunch, ice time etc etc. I also had an opportunity to thank the team for the honor of been assistant captain and that I am most definitely more then willing to help out anywhere and in anyway I can.
Now its late and its time to hit the sack………missing my family and g/friend……..but know you’re all here with me in spirit!!!
Hope everyone had a good Friday and that you weekends are awesome!!!!!
TEN – FOUR!!!
