Did you know what all your home can do FOR you? I sure didn’t, I honestly had no idea just how much tech is available to us. That is until I visited the Best Buy Tech Home.
I am so excited to share with you all I learned and I cannot encourage you enough to head out to the Mall of America to visit the Best Buy Tech Home for yourselves. Of course if you don’t live in Minnesota be sure to check out my favorite products below and head over to Best Buy’s website or visit a local store to test them out for yourself.
I bet you’re wondering; “WHAT is the Best Buy Tech Home?” It is literally a model of a home hooked up with all the latest ‘smart’ technology Best Buy has to offer.
Located at the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN from 8/22 – 9/17. You can tour the home, play with, test out and otherwise get all your Tech Home questions answered by the Best Buy Blue Shirts or Geek Squad Agent. Best Buy carries all of the latest and definitely greatest products in the connected home market. Add to that the knowledge the Blue Shirts/Geek Squad Agents have and you’ll leave knowing what all your home is missing and just how ‘techy’ it can become.
During the tour I was able to use all of the devices they feature, it was all hands on, from the front door, through the bedroom, living room, and kitchen. Changing lighting colors from the Blue Shirts tablet, unlocking and locking doors via an app on a tablet or smartphone – it really is amazing!
At the core of the Best Buy Tech Home is the Samsung SmartThings Hub – the ‘brain’ of the operation. It connects wirelessly with hundreds of compatible devices that are able to control your home’s lighting, the locks, thermostat, and much more, all from your smartphone or tablet with the SmarThings App.
In speaking with the Best Buy Blue Shirts I was pleased to hear that once you have the Samsung SmartThings Hub and SmartThings App you are able to use numerous products and brands to completely customize your home. The Samsung SmartThings Hub is compatible with ZigBee, Z-Wave, and IP-connected devices and it works with the following brands: Samsung, Honeywell, Schlage, Yale, First alert, D-Link, OSRAM LIGHTIFY, Leviton, Bose, Cree, and others.
Touring the Best Buy Tech Home and testing out the numerous Samsung SmartThings add on products there are numerous I plan on looking into more closely for our home. Two of my favorites are the Samsung SmartThings Arrival Sensor and the Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor.
As many of my followers are parents of school aged children I know that the Samsung SmartThings Arrival Sensor will also be of interest to you. You are able to place the sensor in your child’s backpack and you’ll be able to know when your child returns from school by receiving a notification on your phone. A great product for us working parents. You are also able to set actions to happen when you or your loved ones get back home (or leave), such as turning lights on or off and unlocking the door.
Samsung SmartThings Motion Sensor is the next item I want to get set up in my home. I like that you are able to receive notifications if it senses motion in your home. It is able to detect motion up to 15′ and a 120 degree range. If the sensor detects motion it sends an alert to the Samsung SmartThings Hub and you are notified via your preset app settings.
However, the motion sensor doesn’t only detect motion, it also monitors temperature changes in your home so you are able to keep your home as warm, or cool, as you need it. At just $31.99 (currently on sale), you’ll be able to pick up as many motion sensors as you need for your home.
As an added bonus – many of the individual Samsung SmartThings products are available in the Samsung SmartThings Home Monitoring Kit. Included in this kit are the Hub, motion sensor, 2 multipurpose sensors and a smart outlet – you can get all of this, in this kit, for $249.99 $199.99 (currently on sale).
Of course I speak highly of Samsung products in this post and the reason is that I personally LOVE Samsung products and have used many of them in my home and personal life for years. That includes the BRAND NEW Samsung Galaxy Note7, which I pre-ordered to ensure I’d receive it on the day it was available.
Naturally, the Samsung Galaxy Note7 is included in the Tech Home, and why wouldn’t be it. With the S pen you are able to write, draw, edit and record your thoughts. I love that I can take it out easily jot down a shopping list at home or important notes in a meeting at work. The new Note7 also allows me to continue with my love of photo taking and video making, granted most of these are of Gradie, but nonetheless I am able to snap away and make video after video without worrying about storage as I can expand the memory up to 256GB with a microSD card.

I love all the smart appliances. It is amazing how much technology is moving into the home. However, as we become dependent on it the more we suffer when the power goes out.
