Grateful to Officiate

November 25, 2011 By Africa

For only five short, bold, beautiful minutes. Unscripted and unedited. We just write without worrying if it’s just right or not.

Won’t you join us?

      1. Write for 5 minutes flat – no editing, no over thinking, no backtracking.
      2. Link back here and invite others to join in.

3. Most importantly: leave a comment for the person who linked up before you – encouraging them in their writing!

OK, are you ready? Give me your best five minutes on:

Grateful…

I’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again.  I am grateful to be an official/referee.  I cannot tell you the amount of joy I get from officiating hockey games, I cannot fully explain the joy it brings to my life getting to an arena, putting on my ‘gear’ and getting out onto that freshly zamboni’d ice!!

The thought that people actually pay me to do this just astounds me.

The meaning of teamwork amongst officals is something like I’ve never experienced before.  Granted I’ve been on numerous teams, in numerous sports, but teamwork amongst officials is nothing like those teams.
We are able to communicate to one another with the simple nodding of our head, or pointing of a hand.  It doesn’t matter if we’ve known each other for years and worked together in games before, or if we just met one another for the first time when we walked into the ref room.  We communicate without talking, we ‘cover’ for one another when we get caught up on the boards, we are able to talk through tricky situations and once the game is over, we are friends and will talk of ‘war stories’ in the locker room, how we just missed getting hit with the puck that one game, or how we were yelled at by a coach or player in another.

Not once, do I ever take the opportunity to be on the ice as a RIGHT, for me each opportunity to be on the ice is a GIFT, a gift for which I am truly GRATEFUL!!

And my time is up!!!

Such a fun post! Thanks for the peak inside the world of officiating, and that’s beautiful how well you can communicate and work TOGETHER, regardless how long you’ve known another referee.

and a ps, being on the ice is fun! My husband and I have taken our boys (almost 4 and just-turned-2) onto the ice twice in the last month. The first time they refused to stand on the ice, and the second time they bravely took a couple of steps and practiced marching back and forth, with LOTS of coaxing from us. 🙂 You’re lucky for all the times you’re able to go on the ice! 🙂

Wonderful post. A friend and I got free tickets once to go to a hockey game and so we went. We decided to leave after the 3rd inning (is that right?) and avoid the parking and everyone leaving at the same time – and then we discovered there were only 3 innings! LOL

Hi – I’m here from the Stumble event on Kelly’s lucky You and would love a stumble back. You can pick one if you’d like – thanks!
